New Report Aids On-Farm Organic Entrepreneurs
Today’s small farms can find paths to profit in organic certification, as
well as on-farm processing of raw commodities into value-added products – wheat
into flour, tomatoes into salsa, and so on.
In combination, each of these strategies
can enhance the other’s value still further. However, both require planning
and paperwork, and those obstacles keep many farmers from taking the plunge.
Now, a new free report helps farmers navigate the red tape, simplifying the
creation of on-farm organic processing enterprises.

New Resource Out for On-Farm Entrepreneurs
A growing number of small farms in Oklahoma, almost 90 in 2009, are reaping more profit by becoming “certified organic,” selling everything from strawberries to pecans.
Others are adding value to their crops by processing them on the farm-- turning tomatoes into salsa, or milk into cheese, or grapes into wine, as in the booming wine industry.

Pond-Raised Prawn Field Day Set for Sept. 12
Most Oklahomans wouldn’t bring hip waders and seining nets to
a roundup. After they meet Jeremy Eaton, that could change.
On September 12, Eaton will host a field day to demonstrate how he’s
been raising freshwater shrimp, or prawns, for the past two years in
the pond on his farm near Cashion, northwest of Oklahoma City.

New Program Could Benefit Farmers and Families
It’s an historic change that could benefit the health of
both families and family farmers in Oklahoma.
Beginning in August, fruit and vegetable growers selling at farmers’ markets
in Oklahoma will have a large new group of customers: women and
children who participate in the USDA Supplemental Food Program
for Women, Infants and Children, better known as WIC.

the proclamation.

Foods Week” during the week of June 14-21, 2009,

by means of a proclamation and the advocates anticipate that Tulsa
