Buy Fresh Buy Local – Central Oklahoma

Buy Fresh Oklahoma labelBuy Fresh Buy Local - Central OK is the 2nd BFBL chapter to form in the state.  Locavores, farmers, environmentalists, dieticians, business owners and volunteers from several grassroots organizations in the OKC metro came together in April, 2009 with the goal of “increasing awareness and access to local foods in the central Oklahoma region.”

Early accomplishments include organizing OKC’s first annual Local Food Fair, a huge success with hundreds in attendance; creating internet “food alerts” for helping farmers with unexpected surpluses of produce to quickly find customers; and organizing a spring workshop for new growers interested in selling at farmers’ markets in central OK.

Current activities include development of a 2010 Local Food Guide and hosting the 2nd Annual Local Food Fair at the Harn Homestead in OKC, featuring local farmers with produce, meats, cheeses, and beverages for sampling and purchasing.

Groups with key involvement in past and current activities include the Cimarron Group of the OK Sierra Club, as well as Sustainable East OK County and Sustainable OKC - both are chapters of the Oklahoma Sustainability Network.

Contributions of time, energy and other resources are always needed to allow this vital work to continue and expand.
