New Edible School Garden Planning Guide Available Online
A Planning Guide for Edible School Gardens is now available
free for downloading.
The Guide is a collection of tools and information for
planning and implementing school garden projects.
An ever-growing body of research is demonstrating that school
gardens are innovative tools for improving kids’ diets, nutrition,
academic performance, and physical fitness.
The Guide contains organized information on the benefits
of edible school gardens, a generalized step-by-step plan for organizing,
establishing, and maintaining school gardens, and a selection of
resources (as well as links to many more) on gardening with kids.
The Kerr Center’s Doug Walton, and Susie Shields of the
Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, developed the Guide. Other
project partners were the Oklahoma State University Cooperative
Extension Service and the USDA Cooperative State Research, Education,
and Extension Service.
The Guide, along with an extensive selection of related
resources, is available at http://www.deq.state.ok.us/mainlinks/ediblegardens.htm. A
CD version is also available; contact Susie Shields at 405.702.5166
or susie.shields@deq.state.ok.us.
