Know Your Bugs: Workshops in Stillwater and Oklahoma City in July

It’s always good to recognize your enemy.

In the case of insects, that’s not always easy.

To help gardeners and small-scale vegetable growers learn money-saving, environmentally friendly ways to manage pests, the Kerr Center is offering two workshops during the height of the garden season.

The first will be held in Stillwater at the Payne County Fairgrounds on July 16 from 4-8.

The same information will be offered at a workshop at OSU-OKC, 900 N. Portland, in Oklahoma City, on July 27 from 4-8.

Participants will learn how to identify insect pests and safely use a variety of methods to manage them.

Sue Gray, Tulsa County Extension Horticulturist, along with other OSU Extension staff, will explain “Digital Diagnostics,” a service allowing producers to email photos of pests to OSU entomologists for identification.

Workshop attendees will also receive training materials about safe food handling of fruits and vegetables for direct market sales.

Registration costs $15 and includes an evening meal. Space is limited. Registration deadlines are July 9 for Stillwater and July 20 for Oklahoma City.

For more information and to register online, one can visit www.kerrcenter.com or call 918.647.9123, or email jcastillo@kerrcenter.com.

Educators from the Kerr Center for Sustainable Agriculture, OSU Extension, and the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry (ODAFF) will teach the workshops.
