Steam can more effectively combat food pathogens on cantaloupes than traditional removal methods. That’s the finding of an Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientist in Pennsylvania. Dike Ukuku and his colleagues have demonstrated that a relatively inexpensive steam cleaner (designed to remove wallpaper and clean outdoor grills) can rid cantaloupes of common pathogens more effectively than existing techniques.
Heirloom Variety Trial Report 2008: Sweet Sorghum
The Kerr Center began growing sweet sorghum and making sorghum syrup in 1986. In 2008 we planted a selection of heirloom sorghum varieties to see how well they might do. Unfortunately, a tropical depression flattened most of the plants the first week of September, effectively ending the trial. Still, this report contains some early observations that other growers might find useful.
