Home-based Food Entrepreneur Virtual National Conference @ online

This conference is designed to offer practical, actionable ideas and information from some of the leaders of the cottage food movement and from cottage food entrepreneurs who are running a successful, and profitable, business from their home kitchen.

The conference is for anyone and everyone who is operating or wants to start a home-based food enterprise. While it is true that each state has its own cottage food and/or food freedom law, this conference focuses on the many issues and challenges facing food business owners regardless of where they call home. As examples, the national conference will explore the differences between operating as a sole proprietor or LLC, how to take your marketing to the next level, ways to approach possible expansion into some form of commercially-licensed operation like a commercial kitchen rental or construction, and how to attract and grow your customer base. Of course, there will be opportunities to connect with others in your state, too.

On each day of the four day virtual (online) conference, a keynote will kick things off, followed by 3 practical workshops, each to include live question and answer sessions. This adds up to a great value of sixteen sessions and over nine hours of content — all hosted on the Whova conference platform that provides plenty of opportunities to engage with others attending. Prizes are even given away for the most Instagram-worthy product photos.

Please note that, in cooperation with efforts to limit the spread of COVID-19, the Kerr Center is currently offering tours by appointment only, and only outdoors. To request a tour, please contact us at least two weeks in advance by calling 918.647.9123 or emailing mailbox@kerrcenter.com (please put “public tour” in subject line).

(Under normal circumstances, guided tours are available one day each month, on the second Tuesday, April through September.)  During these tours, Kerr Center staff show visitors our current horticulture and livestock projects.

Tours go from 9-11 or 1-3 (approximate length),  and cost $10 per person.

Advance registration is required. Contact us a week in advance to let us know you are coming and whether you want to see horticulture or livestock projects or both.

Keep in mind that what is available to see varies according to season. When you call, we can let you know what is available to see. We want you to have the best possible experience!

Pay at the door. Tours begin at the Kerr Center office.

National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) Stewardship Week

NACD’s 68th Stewardship Week will be held April 30 – May 7. In 2023, NACD’s Stewardship Week will be focused on watersheds and the theme of “One Water.”

NACD Stewardship Week is one of the largest national programs to promote natural resource conservation. Celebrated annually since 1955 between the last Sunday in April and the first Sunday in May, NACD Stewardship Week reminds us of our individual responsibilities to care for natural resources.

OKC Living Classroom Grant Program (application deadline)

The Oklahoma City Living Classroom Grant Program seeks to increase habitat for monarchs and other pollinators by providing grants to Oklahoma City metro area schools to create monarch gardens. The gardens will include monarch host plants (milkweed) and nectar plants to provide a food source for monarchs along a vital part of their migration pathway.

Selected schools will receive:
– Two professional development opportunities for teachers in July and August 2022
– Awards of up to $1500 each to purchase garden supplies
– National Wildlife Federation’s Monarch Heroes Curriculum

Public, private, and charter K-12 schools in the Oklahoma City metro area are eligible to apply. This includes schools in the following areas Oklahoma City, Edmond, Yukon, Mustang, Moore, Midwest City, Del City, Norman, Bethany, Piedmont, Deer Creek, Choctaw, and Warr Acres.

Applications are due by 5 P.M. on April 30, 2023.

Grant Application Deadline: Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMPP)

The Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMPP), administered by the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service, funds projects that develop, coordinate, and expand direct producer-to-consumer markets to help increase access to and availability of locally and regionally produced agricultural products.

Supported activities may include developing, coordinating, expanding, and providing outreach, training, and technical assistance to domestic farmers markets, roadside stands, community-supported agriculture programs, agritourism activities, online sales, or other direct producer-to-consumer (including direct producer-to-retail, direct producer-to-restaurant, and direct producer-to-institutional marketing) market opportunities.

A 25% match is required. Eligible applicants include local governments, nonprofits, agricultural businesses and cooperatives, and others.

Applications are due by May 2, 2023.

The Local Food Promotion Program (LFPP) funds projects that develop, coordinate and expand local and regional food business enterprises that engage as intermediaries in indirect producer to consumer marketing to help increase access to and availability of locally and regionally produced agricultural products. Grants can be used for the planning stages of establishing or expanding a local and regional food business enterprise or to improve or expand a food business that supports locally and regionally produced agricultural products and food system infrastructure by performing feasibility studies, market research, training and technical assistance  for the business enterprise and/or for producers working with the business enterprise. A 25% match is required.

Eligible entities may apply if they support local and regional food business enterprises that process, distribute, aggregate, or store locally or regionally produced food products. Such entities may include:

All applicants must be domestic entities owned, operated and located within the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands to be considered eligible. Entities that are eligible to apply include:

  • Agricultural businesses and cooperatives.
  • Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) networks and associations.
  • Food councils.
  • Economic development corporations.
  • Local governments.
  • Nonprofit and public benefit corporations.
  • Producer networks or associations.
  • Regional farmers’ market authorities.
  • Tribal governments.

The deadline for submitting applications for the 2023 Request for Applications is May 2, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time.
