Overview:
Cantaloupe is a nutrient-dense, low-calorie fruit packed with vitamins A and C, which support immune function and skin health.  Composed of over 90% water and essential electrolytes, it is highly effective for hydration.  Additionally, antioxidants like beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin protect vision and reduce inflammation, as well as help manage blood pressure.

How to grow:
Cantaloupe can be transplanted or directly seeded into light, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.5 to 7.0, with a southern exposure being ideal.  Good soil moisture is important in early stages of growth and during pollination, when fruits are setting.  After this point, do not water the last week before fruits are ripe, as overwatering can cause bland fruit.  Since melons like consistently warm conditions, woven fabric will make for earlier crops and better yields.  Typically grown on the ground, these fruits can be grown upwards on a trellis if the fruit is supported.

Seasons to be grown:
Melons are a warm-season crop, so they should be started in mid- to late spring and grown through the summer.  Succession planting by starting new seeds every three weeks will ensure a steady harvest of melons throughout the summer season.

Common pest pressure:
Cantaloupe plants are vulnerable to a variety of insect pests and wildlife.  Common insect threats include cucumber beetles, aphids, and squash bugs, while wildlife like raccoons and field mice often target the ripening fruit.  Protect your crop using floating row covers, physical fruit cages, or insecticides like Bt and insecticidal soap.

Common disease pressure:
Alternaria leaf blight begins as small, circular spots on older leaves that develop target-like, concentric rings.  Severe defoliation causes fruit to lose sweetness and suffer from sunscald.  It can be controlled by using copper fungicide sprays every 7-10 days after first symptoms.  Downy mildew starts as angular, yellow spots on the upper leaf surface, eventually turning brown.  It thrives in high humidity.  It can be controlled using copper fungicides, hydrogen peroxide, or citric acid.  Powdery mildew is characterized by white, powdery fungal patches on both the upper and lower leaf surfaces.  Treatment is the same as for downy mildew.
